Golden Wedding Anniversary At The Forest Hotel, Dorridge

The CoverUps West Midlands Live Wedding Band

We’ve enjoyed our quieter season this winter and have hunkered down preparing for 2017 wedding season! The quiet season is, however, coming to a close. The CoverUps’ calendar is full of fantastic weddings and events across the UK and we can’t wait to play live rock and pop music for them all!

New Year’s Eve At Lainston House Hotel

The CoverUps were very excited when Sarah from Exclusive Events asked to book the band for the second time for their New Year’s party at Lainston House Hotel. We had such a fun time playing live music at this stunning 5 star hotel last year, we couldn’t wait to return for another epic night!

At the very start of our first set, the guests were already filling the dance floor and raising their glasses to a memorable night. No warm up needed for this lot! The band continued to play through classics such as Signed, Sealed, Delivered by Stevie Wonder and Jonny B Goode by Chuck Berry which kept the high energy going right up until the break.

As the clock started ticking to the end of 2015, we played through the last couple songs The CoverUps will ever play that year which included Don’t Stop Believing by Journey and a favourite record, Don’t Look Back In Anger by Oasis. With a roaring countdown to the new year, and a coordinated playing of Big Ben’s chimes by the DJ, 2016 was welcomed with an eruption of cheers and applause, drinks in the air and hugs all around. To top it all off, the band played the traditional tune Auld Lang Syne to bring the night to a perfect end.

Here’s to another great year of celebration! Happy New Year!!

Burford Bridge Hotel Christmas Party

This Christmas, the band traveled eastward towards Surrey for a Christmas Party held at Burford Bridge Hotel in Dorking. Associated with Mercure Hotels, Burford Bridge Hotel is an excellent venue with a wide range of accompanying options for weddings, corporate functions and parties such as this one!

The band started the night with the famous hit, Valerie by Amy Winehouse which never fails to get people on the dance floor. Immediately following was Stuck In The Middle With You and the old time favourite, Sweet Home Alabama to really get things going! The CoverUps do love performing at weddings, however, equally love a good ol’ festive bash in the holidays!

Big thanks to Crescendo for booking the band for your Christmas Party. Merry Christmas! We hope to see you again next year!

40th Wedding Anniversary At Ettington Park

Ettington Park, in the heart of Warwickshire sits in familiar territory for the band, just beyond Warwick, Leamington Spa and Stratford-Upon-Avon. A regular haunt for the CoverUps, the band always get a warm welcome at Ettington Park. And to everyone’s relief, the party had exclusive use of the hotel, meaning the band were spared the stairs, lifts and corridors to the venue’s Long Gallery!

Get Your Ruby Dancing Shoes On!

Without the same level of formality, it can take a few songs to draw people to the dance floor at parties… But not so with this group! Right from the off, (Marry You, Bruno Mars) the dance floor was bustling. The multigenerational crowd all flocking to the dance floor together.

From The Kinks To The Killers

A key part of being in a live party band is making sure that everyone’s catered for. Even with over a decade of experience playing for all kids of occasions, from weddings, sweet 16s, ski resorts and product launches, the band still raise a smile at the way music, both modern and classic brings people together, both young and old. This night showed this as clearly as any party with songs from Stevie Wonder to Walk The Moon all going down brilliantly.

Enjoy these photos of the night, and hopefully we’ll be back for the Sapphire, Gold or even Diamond wedding anniversaries!

How To Decide, Band or DJ?

Our good friend and fantastic wedding photographer, Hannah, wrote a blog recently on how to decide between a band or a DJ for your evening wedding reception. We thought she made some excellent points on both sides so we wanted to share it on the blog today!

Hannah made a great point that hiring a DJ for your wedding reception could be a lot cheaper than hiring a full live band, “If you’re planning a wedding on a budget and you’re just looking for something to dance to, you might book a DJ based solely on the fact that they will be cheaper than a full band…” This is very true and here’s why…

1. Hiring a professional band means you are paying for every musician’s livelihood. Hiring a DJ means you are paying for that single artist’s livelihood. It’s a simple matter of numbers when it comes down to it.
2. To a professional musician or DJ, your wedding day is not on the same level as a pub gig and it will not be treated like such. Every professional musician, including DJs, put a great amount of time and effort into honing their instrument and excelling in their talent.

So, in our experience, we recommend that you choose whichever suits your budget. Whatever fits the bill, literally. And we suggest that you give your money to whichever will best give you a professional service at the rate you can comfortably afford!

A few great pros to booking a wedding band…

Live music! Music that is live, not recorded, has a personal edge and feel that doesn’t come from a playlist. You get real musicians, giving you a real live performance and are fully present in the room with you. They engage in the atmosphere, mood of the guests and flow of the evening.

Because a live band is personally engaged, you’re likely to get a better turn out on the dance floor. If the band is up there rocking out, dancing and having a good time, you’re going to want to join in and do the same!

This is what we love about our job! What more could we ask for than to rock out and get people dancing for a living?! A band are more than just musicians playing songs on a stage. We get the party going and enjoy the night just as much as you do!

What is going to make your night the night you will always remember? Like Hannah said,“At the end of the day, it’s about having fun and celebrating your marriage with your family and closest friends in the best way possible.”

A Venitian Masqeurade For New Year’s At Lainston House

It’s the band’s 3rd or 4th visit to Lainston House, which sits just outside Winchester and a stone’s throw north from Southampton. It’s a beautiful 5* hotel, oft used by football teams playing Southampton; as it was the previous year. This time the room was decked in Venetian Attire, with human statues greeting guests as they moved through to the room from the bar where they’d been having a drinks reception. As you can see from the photos, it was all very elegant!

Something For Everyone

One thing we pride ourselves on at the CoverUps is providing a diverse repertoire: something for everyone. During sound check, in which we tested the sampler with parts from Dynamite by Taio Cruz and Happy by Pharrell Williams, we were told “You know this an older audience!” Well, for a start, we’re firm believers that you’re only as old as you feel. And at that – the audience were certainly not ‘old’ in any sense, and very up for the party. This said we did spend the first set largely ‘off-list’, plucking songs from our extensive repertoire to entertain the audience with a set largely from the 60s and 70s. It’s always fun dropping in tracks we weren’t planning to play: it keeps us on our toes and the set feeling exciting!

Playing Through New Year’s

With the countdown ready, we began our second set with Van Morrison’s Brown Eye’s Girl, and extended it through to the 10s countdown! From there it was a rousing few choruses of Auld Lang Syne (our own special take on the traditional New Year’s Song) and on with the set becoming more modern as the night went on.

Fears amongst the organisers that people might not keep partying through until the early hours were proven unfounded – the dance floor packed through til 1am when we sadly had to start making our long way back home! A great start to 2015 though – check out the photos below!

Shottle Hall For Another Christmas Party

This Christmas season has been bustling with staff Christmas parties, which all make a fun departure from the weddings that the band play throughout the summer months. This night in Derbyshire, it was the turn of Atkins Global, a world-renowned engineering firm, to enjoy the CoverUps’ finest party tunes!

Live Band And DJ

The company had opted for both live band and DJ as their entertainment for the evening. While not strictly necessary (we’re always happy to keep the atmosphere with recorded music between the live sets) it does make for a diverse evening of musical entertainment. The DJ started the evening with some background tunes, becoming livelier as dinner finished.

A generous tab at the bar kept the staff happy through the early parts of the evening, people taking turns as if tag teaming between the bar and dance floor!

Timing Is Everything!

We spent some time before the performance discussing the timings with the venue and DJ to make sure that we made the most of what they’d booked. While it makes sense to have the band playing at key moments, it’s also good to not chop and change too much. We decided in the end to play two longer sets, rather than the 3 shorter sets originally requested, giving the DJ a much better run at it during the band’s break.

Suffice to say, the second set really got the crowd going! Massive modern classics like Dynamite and Locked Out Of Heaven were flanked by old school classics from Bon Jovi, Journey and Bryan Adams to take the night up to the next level! The dance floor was so lively by the time we finished that the DJ couldn’t even wait for an encore, and got playing right away with some brit pop tunes.

I hope we get to play for this lot again – it was great fun. And who knows, we might even play a wedding at Shottle Hall before the year’s out!
