2016 – It’s Been Quite A Year!

Happy New Year to all of our clients past, present and future! What a year it’s been!

The CoverUps have traveled as near as Wethele Manor in Leamington Spa and as far as Harrogate International Centre in Harrogate this past year. Having been a live West Midlands band for over a decade now, you’d think we would be tired of the travel. But truth is, the band still love playing live music for weddings, parties and corporate events all over the UK. We are really looking forward to a new year full of weddings and events for all of our lineups!

We still have dates available for 2017 so if you haven’t yet received a quick quote for your event please get in touch through our contact form here.

Enjoy a fully live video below highlighting some of our favourite moments of 2016!

September Recap!

This September The CoverUps played live music for several weddings, a 21-st birthday party and a corporate event. It was definitely a busy month for this Coventry based function band!

Beautiful Barn Wedding In Worcestershire

Our first event of the month saw the band at Curradine Barns for Laura and Sarah’s wedding reception. The CoverUps enjoyed returning to this beautiful barn wedding venue located in the small village of Shrawley in Worcestershire. With 3 x 45 minute sets and plenty of requests by the brides we had a set list full of fun favourites that kept the dance floor full all night long! The band even changed the words to Moves Like Jagger to ‘Moves Like Hannah’ at the request of the brides. Everyone loved it!

5-Piece Wedding Band In Worcester

It was a double header weekend for the band as the next day we arrived at Orchard Manor in Worcester for Claire and Kush’s wedding day. This was a special one as the band played for Claire’s 21st birthday party and now it was her wedding day! I suppose having been a band for over a decade it was only a matter of time before this would happen! With our 5-piece lineup, Claire and Kush had a set list full of both male and female lead tracks including Only Girl In The World by Rihanna and Chasing Cars by Snow Patrol. It was a brilliant night all in all.

A Happy Wedding Day In Surrey

Our next wedding brought the band to Nonsuch Mansion in Sutton, Surrey as a 5-piece lineup. The bride and groom picked Happy by Pharrell Williams for their first dance and the cover went down a treat. Soon after, guests joined the happy couple (pun intended!) on the dance floor for a night of Queen, Michael Jackson, The White Stripes, Spin Doctors and other classic rock covers! Christen and Mike on lead vocals did a wicked job covering these mega records.

21st Birthday Party Black Tie Style

The band was then booked to play live music for Tom and Harry’s joint 21st birthday party in Sheepwash, Melton Mowbray– a black tie event to say the least! With our 5-piece band, the birthday boys had a set list containing all their favourite songs. A youthful crowd kept the dance floor packed well into the night. Great energy, great party. We will never forget it!

Corporate Event In Harrogate

The CoverUps also visited Harrogate International Centre for Infection Prevention Society’s corporate event. Harrogate International Centre is a conference and exhibition building with a 2,000 seat auditorium and plenty of meeting spaces for events such as this one. With over a 2.5-hour drive, the venue wasn’t necessarily local for our West Midlands based musicians, but the travel was straightforward and the night went without a hitch.

Marquee Wedding In Swindon

To tie our September wedding season to a close we performed at the Evans’ marquee wedding at Manor Farm in Swindon. The bride and groom sent the band a list of their favourite songs before the big day. Teenage Dirtbag by Wheatus and Johnny B Goode were amongst other chosen tracks. We had a great time playing these song requests to a packed dance floor and everyone enjoying themselves. The CoverUps wrapped it up with Wonderwall by Oasis, also requested by the bride and groom, and we couldn’t have imagined a better tune to end the night on a real high.

50th Birthday Party in Downton Abbey’s Very Own!

This gig was definitely one to remember! Highclere Castle, home to TV’s very own Downton Abbey was a spectacular venue for such a unique evening of celebration.

Around the World in 80 Days

The theme for the evening was Around the World in 80 days – a great choice! The guest’s attire and the venue’s decorations reached a new level! As we arrived at the venue, not only were we greeted by picturesque sights of the up-lit castle and the beautiful grounds, but leading up the entrance were life-size props of camel and elephants lining a red carpet through the door. If the entrance wasn’t enough, there was definitely more to come!

Surprise!

We set-up our equipment while the guests were enjoying their 3 course dinner so that our arrival was kept a secret. Immediately after the party sang “Happy Birthday” to Ed, we began our first song and surprised all of the guests! Our element of surprise really gave the evening a boost of excitement and kicked off the night with a bang. There was definitely a party atmosphere in the air!

We had a blast performing for Ed’s 50th and so enjoyed being able to experience such a historical place. Check out the photos in the gallery for a small glimpse into a great evening!

Brand New Demo Tracks!

Back in Easter we took a trip down to the Rec House Recording Studio in Bath to record some new tracks that didn’t quite make it into our 5-piece demo late last year. Choosing which songs to record is always a tough decision, so we were really glad to get the opportunity to add these songs to the demo.

Vocal recording, mixing and production was courtesy of our good friends at Push Record.

Below are some photos from the day – we had a great little road trip!

Rocking 50th Birthday Party In Kenilworth, Warwickshire

This year, more than ever, we’ve been booked for birthday parties – and it’s been great fun! Tonight’s was a rocking 50th – with requests from Mud to Slade – tracks taking us back (to before we were born!) and bringing us right up to date too.

    Doing It For The Kids!

In his wisdom, our organiser recommended we played some tracks to get the kids up and dancing first off and that the parents would join once they’d had a drink or two – and he hit the nail right on the head! At weddings almost the opposite logic applies – get the parents of the bride and groom and their friends up first, and the ‘youth’ will follow. But tonight was quite a different audience makeup, and actually, bashing out some McFly, Outkast and Scouting For Girls really got the party started!

Kenilworth – A Great Place For A Coventry Band

It’s always great in this job to know that you’re not 2 hours but 10mins from home! It can often give us a real boost through the gig, and tonight was definitely one of those. We had a lot of fun, especially with a couple of new tracks to us – including Tiger Feet By Mud – it made a really refreshing change from much safer sets that we’ve played in the past!

No photos sadly from this show – time to set the camera up ran away from us… perhaps check out another blog post to see the band in action!

    Recording Studio Day In Bath

Keeping our demos and repertoire bang up to date is always a challenge – but one we relish! We headed down to the Rec House Recording Studio in bath to lay down some new tunes!

    Live Band

Despite all the technology, recording a live band is definitely an art rather than a science. Today we had a mission to get the instruments down to three songs. It may sound crazy, only 3 minutes a track, surely the whole set could be recorded in a day?! Well, there’s far more than meets the eye getting things to sound just so on a recording, so even drums can take all day!

    Experts In Recording

Thankfully the guys at the Rec House knew exactly what they were doing, and thanks to some beautifully tuned drums, setting up took scarcely more than an hour… A couple of runs of the first track and it was time for lunch!

Through the afternoon we spent some time getting the feel of the songs just right, and once drums and bass were down to the three tracks, it was time for Gaz to step up on guitar. Mics were carefully placed in front of his beautiful fender twin, and the volume was cranked suitable to get the elegant drive the amp is so well known for.

    Karaoke Tracks

By the end of the day we had the stems to what amounted to 3 Karaoke backing tracks – all the instruments, but no vocals. Vocals would be recorded another day, by the wonder of technology, closer to home at Push Record Studios in Coventry. Watch this space for the finished products – but for now, just enjoy some shots of the guys at work!

    30th Birthday Party Near Birmingham

Booking live bands for birthday parties seems to be becoming more and more popular. This, our first 30th birthday party for a while was a pleasure to play. Our birthday girl was in high spirits from start to finish and the intimate pub venue gave us all something of a nostalgic feeling.

A Pub Gig With A Difference

As with so many musicians, we all spent our formative years playing any pub that would have us. So playing the Malt Shovel had a bit of a throwback to our youth… though it’s certainly fair to say that it was a far nicer pub than those we played those few years ago!

    Live Party Band

As far as parties go we think there’s nothing to bring them to life like a great live band. It was such a pleasure playing for people who were there to just enjoy being together. A close group of friends, family and colleagues all seemed to know each other in one way or another, so the air in the room was lively and relaxed.

Cue the CoverUps to turn that upbeat feeling into dancing! The first of this night’s 3 sets kicked off with Faith – not too in your face, but lively enough to get people’s foot tapping. The first set remained polite, leaving the rockier tracks for the second and third sets. The birthday girl (should that be lady?!) had been quite selective with her set list – but she had great taste so this made, with a little tidying up from us, for a great night!

    Speeches To Finish

There’s no etiquette or formal traditions when it comes to birthday parties, but a speech or two is always a good place to start. Both the birthday girl and her father took to the mic to thank all the guests and make a little more fuss of the lady of the day. It was a lovely finish to a great night. Here’s to her 4th decade!
