Coombe Abbey is one of Coventry’s busiest wedding venues. Capable of hosting 3 completely separate wedding parties on the same day they really have got wedding receptions down to a fine art. This time we were in Coombe Abbey’s elegant Cloisters – a part of the original building and a wonderfully picturesque room.
Close To Our Coventry Home
The park at Coombe Abbey is a regular haunt for those members of the band with young families, so the trip to the venue is one we’re very familiar with. The long drive way up to the venue is quite spectacular, and while we normally turn off to the park, we made the trip right up to the main building. Load in was via the front courtyard, which is a lovely place to be.
Running On Time!
We’ve played at hundreds of weddings and a common theme is that the timings slip. There’s so much to organise and to get through on the day that it’s no surprise when things are anything from 15mins to an hour ‘behind’ when it gets to us… This is never an issue as far as we’re concerned – it’s important to stay relaxed on your big day, and we’re happy to do what we can to bring things back on track. This time however, timings were spot on! We’d just wolfed down our dinner, and we were on!
Live Band And A DJ
Venues like Coombe Abbey often have a house DJ who is part and parcel of booking the venue (or available at a good rate). As such, we were playing alongside the resident Coombe Abbey DJ, which was great for us. While it’s never a problem us providing music between the sets, to have this responsibility – and that of playing the first dance – taken care of always gives us a bit of breathing space. We always provide the DJ with a set list on the night, so we don’t duplicate any songs, and it’s great to have someone playing a compliment to the live set!
The couple were great music fans and really appreciated everything we and the DJ played. Their first dance was Bless The Broken Road by Rascal Flatts, which was a lovely choice.
The whole night went a storm (as you can see from the photos below). The new vocoder during Get Lucky (which we drop into from Billie Jean) really turned some heads, which was a nice moment for us! As for the rest, you’ll just have to check it out in the photos!
