Ettington Park Wedding In March

Ettington Park, one of the best wedding venues in Warwickshire, was The CoverUps’ location for yet another fantastic wedding. This venue is not only a favourite of the band because it’s close to home, but because it has proven to be welcoming, accommodating and fitting for every wedding we have had the pleasure of playing at! Safe to say, The CoverUps were over the moon to be invited back for Elizabeth and Adam’s special day.

The band arrived at 6:00pm to set up and sound check. After a hearty meal provided by the hotel, the band were ready to play the bride and groom’s first dance choices, Time In A Bottle by Jim Croce and Stuck In The Middle Of You by Stealers Wheel. It wasn’t long before eager guests were encouraged to the dance floor and we jumped into our first set with Come Up And See Me by Steve Harley & Cockney Rebel.

With a mix of old time classics and current top chart tracks, the night went down a storm and we couldn’t be more pleased to see a dance floor full until the very end.

The band finished the night on a real high with Don’t Look Back In Anger by Oasis. And with that, we congratulated the bride and groom and called it a very successful night!

Congratulations once again Elizabeth and Adam. Thank you for inviting the CoverUps to play a part in your special day!

Wonderful Night At Walton Hall

Walton Hall is a regular haunt for the band. As one of the busiest wedding venues in the West Midlands, it’s not too surprising! A stunning 16th Century Mansion, Walton Hall stands in some beautiful grounds that sum up the best of Warwickshire countryside. With a collection of bars and function rooms, Walton Hall is also a well-equipped wedding venue for the British weather! On this day, fortunately, the couple were blessed with a rain-free, though chilly day!

Thinking Out Loud

We were introduced for the first dance by the delightful Reuben Lynch, a toastmaster we’ve worked with a few times over the years. He’s got a lovely warm, friendly style and it’s always fun being at a wedding with him.

The couple chose what we think is the first dance song of 2014 – Ed Sheeran’s Thinking Out Loud. It’s a classic, beautifully written song. The verses sum up the feeling of wanting to grow old with someone: a perfect reflection of a Bride and Groom’s feelings on their wedding day. It was a real privilege to play the song live for the happy couple, and as their friends joined them the night got underway!

Playing Through The Night

The couple had opted for an extra half hour of playing time. This was great, and with a relatively early start time, it meant we were playing through most of the evening. From the start, with people joining the first dance the dance floor never emptied. As the night went on the set got more modern, with Pharell Williams, Bruno Mars, Kings of Leon all making appearances. Come On Eileen was particularly good fun – a really fun party tune to chant along to!

Hannah, our resident photographer was able to come along to Walton Hall and take a few shots, which you can find below. Check out her website and find out more about her on her Facebook page. Oh, and while you’re on the Facebook, why not give us a like!

Here’s to the next visit to Walton Hall!

Rocking Out At Wethele Manor!

A stones throw away from our Coventry home, the idyllic Wethele Manor, Leamington Spa was the setting for the wedding of Mr & Mrs Boswell. It wasn’t our first time playing at the Manor so we set up quickly in familiar surroundings while being looked after by the wonderfully helpful staff with food and drink. The night started quickly as the guests filed in for the Bride and Groom’s first dance to the classic ‘Amazed’ by Lonestar, played by the band. This track set the rocky tone for the night as our first set was filled to the brim with rock classics from band like The Beatles, Blur, The Strokes and Guns ‘n’ Roses. It proved to be very popular with the crowd as the dance floor was packed for the whole set, and there were even one or two shouts of ‘encore’ at the end of the first half!

Guitarist Steals The Show

The second set was another rock-filled extravaganza and throughout the crowd couldn’t stop watching Steve our guitarist as he nailed classic solo after classic solo. A surprising hit of the night was ‘Basket Case’ by Green Day. A song specifically requested by the Bride & Groom, it went down a storm and the words were sung in unison by almost everyone in the room! By the end of our second set everyone was rocked out, and entertained and happy guests said their goodbyes to the happy couple.

The Best In The West (Midlands!)

For us it was a job well done and time head home, putting our dreams of rock stardom back in the box for another day – but at least we got to bring it out for a little while!

Thursday Wedding In Leamington Spa – What A Treat!

There’s certainly no rule that says weddings have to be on a Saturday, or Friday, or Sunday – but for many obvious reasons the weekends are popular amongst couples planning their big day. So to be asked to a wedding on a Thursday night was a rare treat. Not only that, but the reception was right on the band’s doorstep in Leamington Spa – ideal!

Live In Leamington Spa

The band used to live in a house in Leamington Spa back in the early days! Warwickshire plays host to a variety of excellent wedding venues and hotels. The Ashorne Hill Centre is set in beautiful grounds – exceptionally well kept gardens and fantastically traditional buildings. Surprisingly, access to the bar we played in was excellent, so after a timely arrival, set up was straight forward, leaving us fresh for the performance.

First Dance And Song Choices

Tonight saw the band play Tiny Dance by Elton John live for the Bride and Groom’s first dance. It’s a beautiful track and the live piano (well, a midi-keyboard with an excellent piano-simulator!) really set the first dance off.

From there we ploughed on, playing to a bustling dance floor (as you can see from the photos below) all night long. Other tracks requested by the happy couple included Girl From Mars and the 1975’s Chocolate. Girl From Mars is an old favourite of the band’s, growing up in the 90s and being inspired to a career in music by the britpop greats or Ash, the Bluetones, Dodgy, Oasis, Blur and many others. Chocolate isn’t a track we were familiar with before the request, but I can imagine that it’s this type of band that will inspire the next generation in the way we were back in the 90s.

The Band Play On

Otherwise, the set list took fairly typical form – and the dance floor the same! Highlights included Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor and Livin’ On A Prayer, and Place Your Hands, which had taken a little sabbatical from the regular set, but returned to a lively response!

Enjoy the photos, and we’ll see you next time!

Wonderful Night At Walton Hall With An Acoustic Set!

This was our first trip to Walton Hall this year – but the venue’s lost none of its charm. Set in beautiful Warwickshire countryside, the venue really has it all as far as looks go! Arriving in the height of the sunny afternoon showed of the lush surroundings – it hardly felt like being at work.

Acoustic Wedding Breakfast Set

Lead vocalist Mike arrived mid afternoon to get set up for an acoustic set over the wedding breakfast. Despite timings being a little fluid, everything was set up in good time for the guests’ arrival and the acoustic guitar struck up as the starters were served.

Our acoustic set is a mixture between purely acoustic and mellow tunes and songs that as a full band might find their way into the evening set. It’s always good fun to give a twist on songs that people know and love, and the acoustic set is a perfect opportunity to do this.

Set Down, Set Up Again!

As is often the case with the afternoon sets, the location was completely different to the evening, meaning everything needed packing up completely before driving round to a different part of the venue and setting back up again. Things are a little stripped down for the acoustic setup, but still, we were more than ready for dinner when that time came!

Elvis Has Entered The Building

The first dance was Elvis’ rendition of Can’t Help Falling In Love. It’s a lovely track, and while the original recording is hard to recreate (there’s a large choir backing him!) our version maintained the feel of the original.

From there the night went on strength to strength. A few fun tracks that hadn’t made appearances lately included Dancing On The Ceiling, Place Your Hands (rocking riff!) and Chelsea Dagger.

We’ll leave you now with some photos of the day and hope to return for another wedding at Walton Hall soon!

A Charming Wedding Reception at Warwickshire’s Chesford Grange

Tonight’s wedding was hosted at the charming Chesford Grange. Hardly a mile from the old CoverUps HQ in Leamington Spa, Chesford Grange is actually in Kenilworth – though on the road between Leamington Spa and Kenilworth you’d be forgiven for getting that wrong (as we ourselves only noticed it tonight!)

First Dance – Everything by Michael Buble

Tonight’s first dance was Everything by Michael Buble… not, as we joked with the groom, Michael Buble’s entire back catalogue of songs – just the one song entitled “Everything”. It’s a lovely song to choose for a first dance; a great dancing feel and a lovely sentiment throughout. We love playing this song – our fully live lineup suits it down to the ground and, while it’s a tricky one to get feeling just right, we’ve revelled in the challenge.

Enthusiastic Guest Filled Dance Floor

Start to finish, tonight’s dance floor was packed with wedding guests. From the old school 60s tracks in the first set, right through to the modern pop of the second the audience could hardly have been more appreciative of the live music. The band tonight was complimented by a DJ playing in the intervals. His impressive lighting display supplimented the band’s own rig and helped create a lovely atmosphere on the dance floor. Unfortunately for him, his stints were mostly during the evening buffet, so he didn’t have the same full dance floor to play to.

A Happy Happy Couple

The bride and groom tonight were chuffed to bits with the band’s live performance. Speaking to James after we had finished it turns out he used to frequent the same live music venues around the Leamington Spa scene as we did. As we spent a little time lamenting the demise of some of our favourite haunts it became clear that having a live band play at his wedding really was a highlight, and something that he was clearly looking forward to all day. It’s such a great feeling to know that we’ve been a high point of any bride or groom’s wedding day, and we always appreciate it when they let us know there and then – we then get to leave on a real high ourselves!

Yet Another Favourite Wedding Venue!

We had such a great night tonight at Chesford Grange we’ll be looking forward to our next booking there. The staff were great, the venue was perfectly setup for a live wedding band, and it could hardly be more handy from the band’s Coventry base! Here’s to the next one!

Leamington Spa Wedding – Band Glad to be So Close to Home!

With bookings all across the UK and Europe – it makes a refreshing change to be at a venue so close to home. Wethele Manor was the wedding venue for the wedding and it’s evening reception. Happily, one of the wedding’s two best men was an old friend of CoverUps frontman, Mike… so a night with a few unusual treats for the band!

Wedding Bands at Wethele Manor

According to the staff at Wethele Manor, more than half of the 3 weddings a week at the venue have wedding bands! As such, we weren’t the first to have spent a slightly longer than usual sound check working around the room’s sound limiter. We’re well practiced at creating an atmosphere at lower volumes, regularly playing beneath 90dB (busy restaraunt volume) while keeping the energy high-  and this wedding was no different.

Live First Dance

Tonight the band played the first dance; a gentle rendition of Elton John’s Your Song. It’s a lovely choice for a wedding, and the band are always happy to play it live.

A packed room led on to a bustling dance floor into the first set. Highlights this set were definitely Mr Brightside and Sweet Child – always a high energy end to the first half of the night.

Refuel with a Bacon Roll!

A well timed break for some evening refreshments gave the audience a new lease of life into the second half. As you can see from the photos below, the dance floor was bustline right through! The bride and groom had made a number of selections for the set list – triple starring Moves Like Jagger – and this gave us a good indication of the tracks they were into. The second half had a couple of less regular songs; Bet You Look Good On The Dance Floor being one that hasn’t been in the wedding set list for a while.

The night came to a great climax at 11:30pm (the venue curfew) – the bride and groom after an upbeat number to finish off the night. Chelsea Dagger did the job – a packed room gathered round the happ couple as the night came to a close.

The Close to Home Paradox

For some reason, whenever we’re so close to home, or finishing early, the pack down and journey home seem to take longer than expected! A relaxed end to the evening and home shortly after 1am…

We’ll leave you with some photos from the evening, including some rather philosophical quotations from the order of service; a lovely quote there from Neitzsche!

The Band Play a Wedding at Wethele Manor

December got off to a great start with the band playing a wedding at Wethele Manor on the first Saturday of the month. Wethele Manor is one of the closest wedding venues to the CoverUps’ HQ in Coventry, so playing there was met by the band with lively anticipation!

The ‘Live Room’ for Bands

The main facility at Wethele Manor is a large marquee, capeable of sitting somewhere over 100 guests. The ‘Live Room’ (as we call it!) is where the evening entertainment usually takes place. It’s a modern room with a traditional feel, and is a great size for a medium sized wedding crowd. Simon, the man in charge, told us all about the sound limiter in the room, which meant keeping the volume curbed – never an issue for us, especially when it is set to a good volume. We did run into a resonance issue at one point in the set, but managed to work around it for the most part!

Lively First Dance Takes Things Higher

The couple’s first dance was Higher and Higher. A widely covered song, the bride and groom pointed us in the direction of the Eric Bibb version for inspiration of arrangement. It’s a lovely version of the song, and a great choice for a first dance – our live rendition ending on an acapella chorus in 3 parts.

The wedding ended with a rapturous response from the audience, and a groom chuffed to bits (if disappointed to have missed Take On Me; he was apparently waylaid in the marquee – so many people to talk to on one’s wedding day!).
