September Recap!

This September The CoverUps played live music for several weddings, a 21-st birthday party and a corporate event. It was definitely a busy month for this Coventry based function band!

Beautiful Barn Wedding In Worcestershire

Our first event of the month saw the band at Curradine Barns for Laura and Sarah’s wedding reception. The CoverUps enjoyed returning to this beautiful barn wedding venue located in the small village of Shrawley in Worcestershire. With 3 x 45 minute sets and plenty of requests by the brides we had a set list full of fun favourites that kept the dance floor full all night long! The band even changed the words to Moves Like Jagger to ‘Moves Like Hannah’ at the request of the brides. Everyone loved it!

5-Piece Wedding Band In Worcester

It was a double header weekend for the band as the next day we arrived at Orchard Manor in Worcester for Claire and Kush’s wedding day. This was a special one as the band played for Claire’s 21st birthday party and now it was her wedding day! I suppose having been a band for over a decade it was only a matter of time before this would happen! With our 5-piece lineup, Claire and Kush had a set list full of both male and female lead tracks including Only Girl In The World by Rihanna and Chasing Cars by Snow Patrol. It was a brilliant night all in all.

A Happy Wedding Day In Surrey

Our next wedding brought the band to Nonsuch Mansion in Sutton, Surrey as a 5-piece lineup. The bride and groom picked Happy by Pharrell Williams for their first dance and the cover went down a treat. Soon after, guests joined the happy couple (pun intended!) on the dance floor for a night of Queen, Michael Jackson, The White Stripes, Spin Doctors and other classic rock covers! Christen and Mike on lead vocals did a wicked job covering these mega records.

21st Birthday Party Black Tie Style

The band was then booked to play live music for Tom and Harry’s joint 21st birthday party in Sheepwash, Melton Mowbray– a black tie event to say the least! With our 5-piece band, the birthday boys had a set list containing all their favourite songs. A youthful crowd kept the dance floor packed well into the night. Great energy, great party. We will never forget it!

Corporate Event In Harrogate

The CoverUps also visited Harrogate International Centre for Infection Prevention Society’s corporate event. Harrogate International Centre is a conference and exhibition building with a 2,000 seat auditorium and plenty of meeting spaces for events such as this one. With over a 2.5-hour drive, the venue wasn’t necessarily local for our West Midlands based musicians, but the travel was straightforward and the night went without a hitch.

Marquee Wedding In Swindon

To tie our September wedding season to a close we performed at the Evans’ marquee wedding at Manor Farm in Swindon. The bride and groom sent the band a list of their favourite songs before the big day. Teenage Dirtbag by Wheatus and Johnny B Goode were amongst other chosen tracks. We had a great time playing these song requests to a packed dance floor and everyone enjoying themselves. The CoverUps wrapped it up with Wonderwall by Oasis, also requested by the bride and groom, and we couldn’t have imagined a better tune to end the night on a real high.

Ettington Park Spring Wedding

Our last event of April saw the band returning to Ettington Park, one of Warwickshire’s most favourited wedding venues. Only a short 40-minute drive for The CoverUps to Stratford-Upon-Avon, we always find it a pleasure to play so close to home.

On this momentous day, Rachel and Alex declared their love for each other in front of their closest family and friends. The band arrived at 6:00pm prompt to set up and perform a live cover of Thinking Out Loud by Ed Sheeran for the newlyweds first dance. Immediately after, the bride and groom celebrated in only the best way- inviting their guests to join them on the dance floor to bust out their best dance moves!

A Set List That Ensures Success

Rachel and Alex contacted the band before their wedding with a list of song requests. The CoverUps very much appreciate when couples do this as it helps the band craft a set list we are certain the bride and groom will love. Happy by Pharrell Williams and Mr Brightside by the Killers were listed as particular favourites along with other iconic tracks and we didn’t hesitate to add them to the set list!

A classic finishing track, Hey Jude by the Beatles – with a note to Elbow’s One Day Like This – wrapped the evening to a close. As the guests continued to enjoy themselves in the bride and groom’s company, the band packed up their gear, said goodbye and called it a very successful night!

Congratulations Rachel and Alex! Thank you for inviting the CoverUps to play a part in your special day!

Christmas Celebration at Wroxall Abbey

On this particular winter day, The CoverUps returned yet again to Wroxall Abbey, located just down the road from the band’s home base in Coventry. Though the band have performed for numerous weddings at Wroxall Abbey before, it was great to perform live music for a Christmas party this time!

Festive joy was in the air from the moment we arrived. Bubbly was poured, the welcoming scent of holiday treats met our hungry stomachs and we were greeted warmly by smiling faces. We were certainly in for a good time!

We arrived at the venue at 6:00pm sharp to set up and played recorded music in the background for the bride and groom’s evening meal. With instruments ready, we played our first set at 9:30pm when everyone was ready to put their dancing shoes on. Having a cosy number of around 70 guests attending, it was a relaxed atmosphere while guests enjoyed swaying to the music, chatting with their friends and keeping their glasses full to the brim!

As requested, we added a couple Christmas classics into our set list which ended the night on a real high. As we packed down for the night, we provided recorded music until 1:00am while guests said their goodbyes and wished one another Merry Christmas.

Overall, it was a fantastic night that we all thoroughly enjoyed! Until next time, Wroxall Abbey!

Thomas And Andy’s Wedding at Antsy Hall

Just down the road from the band’s home town, Coventry, we arrived at The Orangery at Antsy Hall for Thomas and Andy’s wedding. The CoverUps came well prepared having rehearsed the grooms’ first dance request, Gold Forever by The Wanted. Thomas and Andy encouraged all of their guests onto the dance floor for their first dance which made for a perfect start to the evening!

Ansty Hall did a fantastic job of decorating the ballroom for Thomas and Andy. Balloons were everywhere! The night was full of energy yet laid back at the same time. This allowed the newlyweds to chat to their guests while also enjoy the disco between the band’s sets and rock it out on the dance floor as soon as we started playing again!

Queen Of Pop

Tracks such as Domino by Jessie J and Poker Face by Lady Gaga were added thanks to an additional female vocalist, Christen, as part of our 5-piece band. We always love having an extra vocalist with us. It means we can add female-lead tracks and dive into the favourited pop tracks on our repertoire. We would definitely recommend booking our 5-piece band if you’re keen on pop!

The night went down like a storm. We couldn’t ask for anything more than a full dance floor and everyone enjoying themselves- and that is exactly what we had. We also managed to grab a few photos from the night which you can browse below. We hope you enjoy and think of us if you’re getting married at Antsy Hall anytime soon!

Coventry’s Coombe Abbey For An Elegant Wedding

The CoverUps as a band are very familiar with Coombe Abbey. As one of Coventry’s, nay the West Midlands’ busiest venues wedding venues, it’s understandable that the band make regular visits to the wonderful medieval grounds.

On The Record

It’s not uncommon for the band to be asked to play the recording of a song that they’d be happy playing live. While a band’s live performance of a first dance is for many a real highlight of the day, the original recordings of songs can evoke memories in a way that only the original singer’s voice does. We never take offence either way – and it’s always nice to hear John Legend singing his work in the way that only he does!

Up All Night

It was straight from the first dance the band struck into the first live set. With a variety of classics requested by the couple, and a heavy 80s influence the set was packed with dance floor filling songs. Songs by Soft Cell and the Human league hadn’t made appearances in recent months, so it was lovely to break them out for such an appreciative audience!

On Top Of The World

Playing as a live wedding band is awesome – we get to see people at their very best! The happiest day of their lives, with all their friends and family around them: playing a euphoric set finisher they’ll remember in years to come is just a wonderful feeling.

We’re really excited for Caroling and Tom, and really hoping they have a wonderful first year of married life!

A Relaxed Wedding Party At Warwickshire’s Nuthurst Grange

Nuthurst Grange has quickly become one of the band’s new favourite wedding venues. Just to the South of Birmingham, it lies in Warwickshire countryside barely 20mins from the CoverUps Coventry HQ. On arrival we were delighted to find out our set up was well beyond earshot of the dining wedding guests, leaving us free to get our equipment set up, and even have a quick run through the first dance!

More Than Words

In over a decade, playing hundreds of weddings, it’s amazing that this was the debut for us playing this particular first dance. More Than Words by Extreme is a gorgeous choice, and one both our guitarist and vocalist cut their teeth on nearly 2 decades ago. The delicate track was perfect for the Nuthurst Barn, and as the guitar struck up there were whoops and the guests recognised the distinctive guitar pattern. A few bro-mance harmony moments later and the guests flocked to the dance floor.

80s Power Pop

The night continued with throws of the 80s (while More Than Words was technically released in the 1990, the whole album has that 80s rock sound: just check out Steve playing Decadence Dance from the same album!) From Paul Simon (You Can Call Me Al) to Aha and Huey Lewis And The News it was a time machine trip Marty McFly would have been proud of!

Back To The Future

From there – after a short break for everyone to catch their breath – the band pulled the set right back to the modern day. With Happy by Pharrell Williams running straight into an impromptu rendition of Taylor Swift’s Shake It Off (as requested by the bridesmaids) the band rocked the dance floor hard through to the end of the night.

We’re looking forward to a return to Nuthurst Grange in the new year, but for now, just enjoy the photos of the night!

Return To Wroxall Abbey

In the decade of playing wedding gigs the length and breadth of the UK, few venues have the combination of style, elegance and history that Wroxall Abbey has in abundance. Arriving in the early spring evening with sun peeking through the ominous clouds, the Warwickshire countryside looked full of life and promise.

Sunny Days At Wroxall Abbey

We made the short trip from our Coventry homes to the beautiful Abbey for a delightful couple’s wedding. As we were setting up we heard overheard the exuberant reaction to the speeches and knew we were in for a fun night. After those finished, the happy couple – and they seemed extremely happy! – greeted us, and we had a quick chat over the first dance. They’d chosen Michael Bible’s everything. Its a lovely track, and one we’re really happy playing live.

From there it was a packed dance floor start to finish. The first set was great fun, the 60s stuff being really popular with a very youthful dance floor. It’s always surprising seeing what goes down well, especially on nights like this where the demographic is narrower than it often is at a wedding. Jonny B Goode is always a guaranteed dance floor filler. We’re looking forward to returning to Wroxall Abbey soon!

Wedding At Coventry’s Guildhall

Coventry’s Guildhall is an amazing reminder of what sort of architecture there used to be in this industrial town. At nearly 700 years old, St. Mary’s Guildhall a wonderful historical building and a spectacular venue for a wedding reception. As a band, the stage makes an ideal performance space, and while in medieval times they didn’t consider access for amps and drums and the like, the four band members made relatively short work of the load in!

International Coventry Wedding Band!

Coventry weddings are a real boon for any wedding band based in the West Midlands, but even more so for the band being based in Coventry ourselves. Connections into the city are great, and even the city’s one-way system isn’t too confusing!

Saying that, for the wedding congregation themselves, who hailed from across the globe it wasn’t quite such a familiar surrounding. Having played ourselves for many international audiences over the years, we’re well versed in putting together a set list classic enough to appeal across the continents.

First Dance Jazz

The first dance was a recorded Jazz Suite – and a lovely one it was too. Short of booking the Dave Arch Band from Strictly, there will always be songs that don’t work with a particular lineup and in that situation, it’s great to use a recording.

From there on, things got decidedly more live! Before we began, a school age young lady asked if we played any Pharell Williams. She had, it transpired, learned a dance to Happy, and was hoping to perform it to the audience. We checked when she was likely to leave (children are usually on their way to bed before the first set is over) and brought Happy in to finish off her night. The look on her face was a picture and proud parents looked on and even joined in at times!

As you can see from the photos while the hall can accommodate larger numbers, the audience and band together made a great night. Lots of fun!

Forest Of Arden Wedding – Pop Band CoverUps Style!

The Forest Of Arden Hotel and Golf Club houses a beautiful wedding venue. The band’s first time at the venue for some time it was nice to return in 2014. As with all venues of this calibre, the event was running along in a timely manner, so we arrived a promptly set up all the band equipment ready for the show!

Wedding Bands And DJs

This night was something of a party for the couple, having got married abroad earlier in the year. Their guest list ran into the hundreds, and a big night was anticipated. To that end, the bride and groom had hired not only a wedding band but a DJ as well. It’s always fun for us playing alongside a DJ – there’s usually a good bit of banter behind the scenes, and we get the opportunity to appreciate the work the other is doing during the breaks.

The DJ kicked off the evening with the first dance, which was Barry White’s First Last and Everything. From there we took things on with a chilled but poppy first set. American Boy was a rarity for us, but it feels about time to bring it back in – it’s a gorgeous track, and much fun to arrange for that early evening relaxed vibe.

Wedding Party Vibes

Wedding parties can have quite a different feeling to whole day wedding celebrations. After a long day of formalities, sometimes people’s energy reserves are depleted (at least until after a good buffet!). At a party, people have turned up expectantly, fully prepared for an evening of dancing… And that’s what we found! With 250 guests, I don’t think there was ever everyone on the floor (someone needed to keep the bar propped up!) but the dance floor got rocking early on, and never dipped through to the finale’s of Summer Of 69 and Don’t Look Back In Anger!

A Local Wedding For The CoverUps In Coombe Abbey

This Saturday evening led The CoverUps back to our most local venue, Coombe Abbey, just 10 minutes down the road from our HQ! It’s the second time this year the band made the short trip to Coventry’s busiest wedding venue, and it’s always a joy.

Wedding Requests

We’re always happy to take requests from the couple when putting together our set list and work them in wherever we can. This party was going to be crammed full of requests, and some classics that there were in there too: You Can Call Me Al, Don’t Stop Me Now, Happy, California Gurls… the list was bursing with great party tunes!

Packed Dance Floors

The CoverUps aim is always to draw people to the dance floor with a wide selection of party classics, and this night was no exception! The expectations ride high at an exquisite venue like Coombe Abbey, and that’s why we’re always happy to play there as the finale of the night and get the party going. The 5-piece band had the wedding crowd rocking the dance floor through the night – and a great night it was too!
