Tonight’s wedding took the band across the West Midlands, past Wolverhampton to Blakelands Country House in Bobbington. Surprisingly, we don’t venture into Staffordshire that often, so it was a nice change for the band’s drivers to take a different route! Allowing, as always, for the unexpected we all arrived with half an hour to spare and settle down for a catch up over some dinner.
Hungry Band + Great Food = Happy Band!
The food given to the band was wonderful – absolutely spot on! We were graced with delightful plates of roast chicken dinner. It certainly set us up for the evening’s work!
The load in was straight forward, though up a flight of stairs; but with the whole wedding running to time, and suitable pauses during the days events there was not problem getting set up in plenty of time to be started with the first dance at 8pm.
First Dance and Highlights
The first dance was played by the DJ, though it was a song we’ve played a number of times already this summer. Michael Buble’s “Everything”; it’s a great choice, and I’d certainly never begrudge anyone wanting to have the man himself singing with his silky smooth voice over having the track played live… both work well, and it’s simply a matter of preference.
Tonight’s performance was full of great moments, the dance floor busy from start to finish. For us the highlight of set one was probably Parklife. We’ve started playing this as a mashup; Parklife vs Fit But You Know It by The Streets. Mike Skinner’s spoken style suits the parklife lyrics, and dropping the chorus of the Streets track over the chords of Parklife always raises a smile in the audience.
Live Wedding Band + DJ = Early Home Time
As Blakelands has a resident DJ who was finishing the night, we were finished with the live entertainment by 11pm. A discreet set down in the dark, and we were on the road by midnight!
And with Blakelands Country House only being an hour from home, it’s certainly somewhere we’d love to play another wedding some time soon. Helpful staff, good food, straight forward set up – it’s all in there for a great night!
