A Venitian Masqeurade For New Year’s At Lainston House

It’s the band’s 3rd or 4th visit to Lainston House, which sits just outside Winchester and a stone’s throw north from Southampton. It’s a beautiful 5* hotel, oft used by football teams playing Southampton; as it was the previous year. This time the room was decked in Venetian Attire, with human statues greeting guests as they moved through to the room from the bar where they’d been having a drinks reception. As you can see from the photos, it was all very elegant!

Something For Everyone

One thing we pride ourselves on at the CoverUps is providing a diverse repertoire: something for everyone. During sound check, in which we tested the sampler with parts from Dynamite by Taio Cruz and Happy by Pharrell Williams, we were told “You know this an older audience!” Well, for a start, we’re firm believers that you’re only as old as you feel. And at that – the audience were certainly not ‘old’ in any sense, and very up for the party. This said we did spend the first set largely ‘off-list’, plucking songs from our extensive repertoire to entertain the audience with a set largely from the 60s and 70s. It’s always fun dropping in tracks we weren’t planning to play: it keeps us on our toes and the set feeling exciting!

Playing Through New Year’s

With the countdown ready, we began our second set with Van Morrison’s Brown Eye’s Girl, and extended it through to the 10s countdown! From there it was a rousing few choruses of Auld Lang Syne (our own special take on the traditional New Year’s Song) and on with the set becoming more modern as the night went on.

Fears amongst the organisers that people might not keep partying through until the early hours were proven unfounded – the dance floor packed through til 1am when we sadly had to start making our long way back home! A great start to 2015 though – check out the photos below!

The Band Visit Elmore Court Again For Another Spectacular Wedding!

Elmore Court is fast becoming one of the band’s favourite wedding venues. Less than 70miles from our Coventry home, the wedding venue is perfectly set up and a delight to play. The wonderful lighting and PA set up make our job that bit easier, and the amazing sound proofing mean there are no issue with volume! Trips into the Cotswolds are always fun, but Elmore Court takes it to another level!

5-Piece Fun!

The couple chose to have their first dance recorded. According to our sheet they weren’t 100% sure about which song to have, so choosing to have it recorded meant they could change their mind as late as they liked!

We’d been booked as a 5-piece, and the added female vocal gave us a lot of opportunity for fun in the set. A 5-piece band favourite is Fascination by Alphabeat. Such a wonderful up-beat, happy tune, full of energy and verve always makes the band smile, and the dance floor fill up!

A Band With Free Reign!

The band were given free reign with the live set list, so we got a chance to play our faves throughout the night. Love Machine, Call Me Maybe, Locked Out Of Heaven, Come On Eileen – it’s all great fun to play, and even more fun to dance to it seems!

The night ended with the venue’s strict midnight curfew coming into effect… but fear not! The band had a little trick up our sleeves to give the audience one more song under the radar! Check out our testimonial or the photos below to find out what that was!

Round Birmingham For A Wedding Near Kidderminster

Birmingham’s circumference of motorways, the M42, M5 and M6, are notorious traffic black spots, so we made sure that we set off in plenty of time for the wedding which took us past Birmingham to a little village just north of Kidderminster called Cookley. We actually popped to The Queens Head at Wolverley for some food beforehand, as the hall didn’t have catering facilities. A hearty meal there, and on we went… Arriving at the unassuming village hall, we didn’t expect the venue to be as well equipped as it was! The load in was a real treat – straight onto the large stage which overlooked the delicately dressed room.

Wedding Parties

This wedding reception had the feel of a wedding party. The couple had opted for a small ceremony with only the closest friends and family, and a big wedding party in the evening. As such, they decided not to stand on ceremony, having no first dance and a short speech between the sets. It actually worked really well – the stage in the hall addressing a captive audience. With other rooms to explore the audience were there right through all the sets, which was great as no one missed a thing!

Requests

The set list was dotted with special requests from the happy couple, which was great as it gave us the opportunity to bring out some tracks that we often don’t have an excuse to play! Marry You by Bruno Mars was a fun addition to tonight’s set – the sample of vibraphone giving a really authentic sound. We were graced with Ben Ferrari on lead guitar, and he made excellent work of all the huge guitar hits – Place Your Hand, Don’t Stop Believing, and Sex On Fire were all marvellous with his delightful guitar tone.

The night came to an end with Come On Eileen and Hey Jude – a wonderful and raucous end to a wonderful wedding! The couple has even given us a testimonial before we got a chance to write this blog!

Shottle Hall For Another Christmas Party

This Christmas season has been bustling with staff Christmas parties, which all make a fun departure from the weddings that the band play throughout the summer months. This night in Derbyshire, it was the turn of Atkins Global, a world-renowned engineering firm, to enjoy the CoverUps’ finest party tunes!

Live Band And DJ

The company had opted for both live band and DJ as their entertainment for the evening. While not strictly necessary (we’re always happy to keep the atmosphere with recorded music between the live sets) it does make for a diverse evening of musical entertainment. The DJ started the evening with some background tunes, becoming livelier as dinner finished.

A generous tab at the bar kept the staff happy through the early parts of the evening, people taking turns as if tag teaming between the bar and dance floor!

Timing Is Everything!

We spent some time before the performance discussing the timings with the venue and DJ to make sure that we made the most of what they’d booked. While it makes sense to have the band playing at key moments, it’s also good to not chop and change too much. We decided in the end to play two longer sets, rather than the 3 shorter sets originally requested, giving the DJ a much better run at it during the band’s break.

Suffice to say, the second set really got the crowd going! Massive modern classics like Dynamite and Locked Out Of Heaven were flanked by old school classics from Bon Jovi, Journey and Bryan Adams to take the night up to the next level! The dance floor was so lively by the time we finished that the DJ couldn’t even wait for an encore, and got playing right away with some brit pop tunes.

I hope we get to play for this lot again – it was great fun. And who knows, we might even play a wedding at Shottle Hall before the year’s out!

Donington Park Farmhouse With SVA

With weddings being bread and butter for a function band like us, it’s always fun to play something a bit different. December being Christmas party season gives us plenty of opportunity to break out from the wedding band mould and stretch our musical legs! SVA has a pretty youthful workforce, meaning we could drop many of the older classics and stick with a modern set, which is always fun.

Familiar Surroundings At Donington Park

This was the band’s third live performance at Donington Park, the previous two occasions being weddings, and it’s starting to feel quite familiar. The load in is straight forward, and as you can see from the photos below, there’s a great stage for us. Playing down a long room like that is good fun, and especially when the audience are as receptive as the SVA staff were!

Set Highlights

The set had many great moments, but we particularly enjoyed bringing out the more modern. tracks. Happy, Locked Out Of Heaven, and Get Lucky were all lots of fun. It’s always fun to watch an audience’s reaction when we break out the vocoder in Get Lucky!

Looking forward to our next trip to Nottinghamshire!

Wonderful Night At Walton Hall

Walton Hall is a regular haunt for the band. As one of the busiest wedding venues in the West Midlands, it’s not too surprising! A stunning 16th Century Mansion, Walton Hall stands in some beautiful grounds that sum up the best of Warwickshire countryside. With a collection of bars and function rooms, Walton Hall is also a well-equipped wedding venue for the British weather! On this day, fortunately, the couple were blessed with a rain-free, though chilly day!

Thinking Out Loud

We were introduced for the first dance by the delightful Reuben Lynch, a toastmaster we’ve worked with a few times over the years. He’s got a lovely warm, friendly style and it’s always fun being at a wedding with him.

The couple chose what we think is the first dance song of 2014 – Ed Sheeran’s Thinking Out Loud. It’s a classic, beautifully written song. The verses sum up the feeling of wanting to grow old with someone: a perfect reflection of a Bride and Groom’s feelings on their wedding day. It was a real privilege to play the song live for the happy couple, and as their friends joined them the night got underway!

Playing Through The Night

The couple had opted for an extra half hour of playing time. This was great, and with a relatively early start time, it meant we were playing through most of the evening. From the start, with people joining the first dance the dance floor never emptied. As the night went on the set got more modern, with Pharell Williams, Bruno Mars, Kings of Leon all making appearances. Come On Eileen was particularly good fun – a really fun party tune to chant along to!

Hannah, our resident photographer was able to come along to Walton Hall and take a few shots, which you can find below. Check out her website and find out more about her on her Facebook page. Oh, and while you’re on the Facebook, why not give us a like!

Here’s to the next visit to Walton Hall!
