Close To Home In More Ways Than One

Last Saturday’s gig saw us playing for the second time at Ashton Lodge, a lovely wedding venue just 20 minutes from Coverups HQ in Coventry. Though it had rained on and off there were no damp spirits inside as the house was full of excitement and celebration. With the Bride, Groom and a number of guests being close friends of band-leader Mike, there was a family feel to the evening as soon as we arrived.

The Bride & Groom Set The Standard!

After the new Mr. & Mrs. first dance to ‘Angel’ by Casting Crowns, it was clear the guests were ready to have a good time. It’s always a highlight for us when the Bride and Groom take the time to stay on the dance floor and enjoy themselves! After a first set with the floor absolutely packed it was time for us to take a breather and let the guests refuel by enjoying a tasty pizza buffet. Before we knew it, it was time for us to get the party started again and had yet another full dance floor for the second set. Get Lucky’s appearance out of Billie Jean made for a great surprise to an enraptured crowd. The night ended on a high with ‘Don’t look back in anger’ but Oasis being belted out at the top of everyone’s lungs while surround the Bride and Groom.

After the farewells had been said it was time for us to leave, and the short drive home meant our normally rushed pack down was a lot more relaxed – what a great end to a great gig! A gig close to home in more ways that one, congratulations Mr & Mrs Mascie-Taylor!

The CoverUps Have Much Moore Fun!

Much Moore fun in the countryside

‘Much Hadham’ is a beautiful village set in the countryside of Hertfordshire, amid gently undulating hills, hosts The Henry Moore Foundation. On a hot weekend in June, the venue is an idyllic location for a wedding; made even more special as you are surrounded by Moore’s spectacular sculptures and art installations. Quite a venue and well-worth venturing out of the Midlands for.

Try a Teepee or Two

The CoverUps enjoyed – nay, thrived upon – setting-up in another idiosyncratic feature of this amazing venue: the Teepees. The bespoke, conjoined, conical tents easily accommodate a wedding band, bar and dance-floor with ample room for wedding guests to dance the night away – check out the photos below! The added bonus of this unusual set-up is that it allows the band to discreetly go about their business while guests enjoyed their wedding breakfasts and speeches in the main building, unaware of the hard work outside. In our experience this is a great way to help give a seamless transition between the different stages of the evening.

Dance-floor fillers

After the cutting of the cake the delightful Bride and Groom shared their first dance as Husband and Wife to the band’s live performance of Snow Patrol’s ‘Chasing Cars.’ The dance-floor kept moving; with great enthusiasm shown for Outcast’s ‘Hey Ya’ and ‘Happy’ by Pharrell Williams. Though modern hits were certainly very well-received, old favourites ‘Livin on a Prayer’ and ‘Summer of ’69’ went down a treat and Nirvana’s ‘Smells like teen spirit’ made a welcome return to our setlists.

A glorious evening with fantastic guests and a venue that looked after us well and left us feeling culturally enriched.  Though a long way off the beaten track – what a beautiful track it was!

Lighting Up Stratford Manor

Just over 15 miles south of Coventry, found in one of the most beautiful part of the country, Stratford Manor Hotel is a great venue for large events. As the band walked into the room, the attention to detail definitely set the tone for a great evening!

The Ball Begins!

As the guest arrived in their best suits and gowns there was a high atmosphere of excitement at the night ahead. The evening began with speeches and then led onto a wonderful 3 course dinner – which the band were very grateful to join in with!

A Marvellous Night For A Moondance

After a quick raffle announcement it was time for the dancing to begin. The music started with a distinct 60’s theme with Moondance, Daydream Believer and many more well known tunes to get the dancefloor going. It might have been a bit cautious to start with but it didn’t take too long before people were up on the floor and getting into the partying spirit!

Highlights of the night included some impressive jiving to Johnny B Goode, some slamming air guitar in Sweet Child O’ Mine and the crowd participation in Place Your Hands!

Football Fever

The band decided to power on through 2 whole sets without a break so that everyone could enjoy as much music as possible before England game began that evening and we all really enjoyed finishing the evening by watching the end of the game with the rest of the guests. Just a shame about the result!

As you can see, a great night was had by all! Thank you IPL & the lovely people at Stratford Hampton Manor!

Shrewsbury For Some Giant Jenga, Anyone?

Yet another scenic location, this time in the heart of Shrewsbury, was the backdrop for a beautiful marquee wedding. The weather forecast was set to storm, but when we arrived the sun was shining and guests were enjoying garden games (huge Jenga being the favourite) and sipping on ice cold drinks: perfect!

Early First Dance

After a quick set up, we started our first set promptly with the first dance- ‘Better Together’ by Jack Johnson. As the guitar intro kicked in, the guests cheered on the happy couple and the celebrations began. The crowd didn’t stop moving for the whole of our first set,  dance moves were out in full force and it was clear everyone was having a good time!

We were constantly looked after by the new Mr & Mrs, which helped us to settle into the venue and play our best. It’s always nice when the bride and groom take time out of their busy day to say hello and let us know what they think of the night so far. (top tip: if you’d rather, delegate an enthusiastic usher to take care of this so you can spend more time with your guests!)

A Fine Evening’s Entertainment

After a little break we got straight back to doing what we do best, getting everyone moving again with dance floor filling favourite ‘Valerie’ by Amy Winehouse. As the light outside faded, the dance floor became more packed and emphatic and a highlight of the night was when the bride and groom grooved along to ‘Place Your Hands’ by Reef, showing off their best dance moves! After ‘Don’t Look Back In Anger’ by Oasis was sung at the top of everyones lungs as they linked arms round the dance floor, the new husband and wife left for their exciting 3 week honeymoon!

This gig had it all: fine crowd, fine dining, fine hospitality, and even a bottle of fine wine to take home as a reward… job well done!
