5 Tips to Picking Your Wedding Reception Music

Choosing the right music for your wedding reception can make a huge difference to the feel of your day. Often people talk with great anticipation about the evening reception music – and as the last, and least formal part of the day, it’s the part of the day you can have the most fun with!

Here are our 5 tips to choosing the right music for your wedding reception.

1. What Music Do You Love?

Regardless of anything else that may be said on the subject, it’s your wedding day, and it’s your wedding reception. You have to choose the music that you want – that you love. If that means the music will be provided by a Metallica tribute band, then so be it. The wedding reception is your first chance to relax, with nothing left to worry about. With the ceremony, speeches and formal photographs finished, it’s just a case of kicking back and enjoying yourself. So choose the music that you’ll remember for all the right reasons!

2. Think of Your Guests

The evening reception is a great opportunity to entertain and delight your friends and family. Thinking about the range of ages attending your wedding may help you decide what type of evening entertainment you would like. For example, with a wide range of age groups (often nieces and nephews through to grandparents!) it’s worth looking for an act that will cover music from a number of decades. If you expect to have a more narrow tastes – some whole families share a love for bands like Oasis and the Kaiser Chiefs – then it’d be worth hiring a band that has a number of those songs in their repertoire!

3. The Venue’s Bearing on the Music

You may find it helpful to talk to your reception venue about their recommendations for music. Often venues will have bands who have worked well there in the past. This can be particularly key when choosing music for a venue with a strict sound limitation.

In addition, you may decide that something that reflects the elegance of the venue itself. Often at traditional wedding venues, a harpist, string quartet or acoustic act over a drinks reception can work really well.

4. Consider Your Wedding Reception Timings

The timings of your day will have a significant bearing on what you do for entertainment at your wedding reception. For example – an early dinner may give your guests some time to explore the venue some more while a band set up, before returning for your first dance. A later dinner may create an opportunity for a relaxed acoustic set over a drinks reception. Furthermore, a later dinner may actually leave more time for dancing in the evening if it removes the need for an evening buffet.

5. An Eye on the Budget

Wedding budgets invariably run tight – and if the wedding reception music is left as the last thing to book it can make the world of difference to the quality of the act you’re able to afford. No wedding service should be encouraging you to go beyond your means, but if the reception music is important to you it should be reflected in your budget. The cost of quality live evening entertainment starts around £1250 for a 4 piece act. The CoverUps offer a wedding reception music package for £1500 which includes a late afternoon solo acoustic set too!

Wedding at Ettington Park Hotel near Stratford-Upon-Avon

Just got back from a really fun wedding at Ettington Park Hotel near Stratford-Upon-Avon. The couple, clearly massive fans of live music were seldom off the dance floor: always a good sign!

From the moment we arrived we were excellently looked after by the staff at Ettington Park Hotel. A rarity today was the wedding running ahead of time! The speeches were well underway by the time we arrived at 6pm, and we had scarcely managed two loads in the lift before they were over.

Loading in at Ettington Park Hotel is a little more work than at many venues; the Long Gallery being on the second floor and down a long corridor, with yet more steps! This is one if few venues where we always use our full 90 mins to get in and set up. Tonight, sound check finished bang on 7:30pm.

It was actually during our sound check that the formal wedding photographs were taken. This actually made a lot of sense, since the function room was being turned round, so guests were milling around. Also, the light was significantly less harsh than it had been in the heat of the day; which the photographers said made for much nicer shots. Perhaps something to think about when planning your own wedding timings!

It’s hard to pick a hilight from a night like tonight: the sets were full of great moments. Mr Brightside went really well, and got everyone to their feet dancing, so while it’s always a top track, perhaps this takes it tonight.

The couple asked if we’d have a photo taken in the photo booth, and we quite happily obliged! These prop laden setups make for great fun for the guests at ask sorts of weddings, and we often get involved. Hopefully we’ll get holds of the photo and pop it up on here!

Ettington Park Hotel

Ettington Park Hotel is amongst the most beautiful and eccentric venues in the Warwickshire area. Only a few miles south of Stratford-Upon-Avon the venue sits in rolling countryside as far as the eye can see. The building itself is exquisite, tastefully refurbished and quirky in it’s layout. Offering gothic arches, turrets and intricate stone work, this venue had an effortlessly grand feel.

From a live band’s point of view, while the load in is certainly not the most straight forward, it’s a great place to play. Having played at Ettington Park Hotel a number of times in recent years, we are well versed in ways to effectively move our musical equipment in with the minimum of disturbance to the wedding guests. There is no sound limit, and being acoustically soft room it’s easy to get a great sound without having to be too loud.

Lively Wedding Reception at the Royal Horseguards in London

It was only upon arriving at the Royal Horseguards Hotel that it really hit us exactly what Central London meant! Not a 5 minute walk from Trafalgar Square, the London Eye and many other of the great London attractions, this venue was going to be a spectacular place for a wedding reception!

Central London!

As is typical with many city centre locations, parking is not amongst it’s strong suits. Arriving, as we did, nearly an hour early – having left plenty of time for the central London traffic – we took it in turns loading in, and waiting with the cars. Once inside, and parked up, we had a little time to explore before the room became available to set up. Throughout, the venue is elegantly and tastefully decorated. The central staircase is a real work of art (rather un-expertly pictured above!). Around 200 guests were seated in the Gladstone Library for dinner, and when helping the venue with their in-house music system, we took the photo below. As you can (hopefully!) see, it’s a lovely room for a wedding breakfast!

Live Wedding Band Performance

The performance itself went really well. The first dance was Florence and The Machine’s take on You’ve Got the Love – a great choice of song, and the couple seemed genuinely excited to be dancing together. From there on out the dance floor never ceased to be bustling, right through to the finale of Don’t Look Back in Anger (a particular request of the groom).

With the load in and out being up 2 floors in a lift, we can’t say this was the most straight forward of wedding venues to play – but we can certainly say it was worth it! The views from the Reading and Writing room where we were playing were spectacular – the opposite bank of the Thames lit in vibrant colour, with the London Eye drawing your focus. And in all the grandeur, it’s safe to say this is a venue who take pride in the little details – right down to the fire exit signs!
